Kesha Writes Open Letter To Her 18-Year-Old Self

Kesha has written an emotional open letter to her 18 year old self.

The letter, shared by CBS’s ‘This Morning’, reveals some of the hardships and struggles the singer faced in her quest to find fame and reflects on where she is in her life today.

The ‘Your Love Is My Drug’ singer begins the note by saying “We’ll start with the good news… you made it!”

“The bad news is, you nearly killed yourself on the road to success.”

The singer continues “fuelled by fear of failure, crippling anxiety and insecurity, you’ll become severely bulimic and anorexic.”

“And the worse your disease gets, the more praise you will get from some people in your industry, and this will really, really mess with your head.”

Then, pleading with her teenage self to believe she IS ‘good enough’, Kesha says “that bad-girl, I-don’t-give-a-shit attitude, it’ll work for a while, but the truth is, you don’t need to put on an act.”

“You can just be Kesha Rose Sebert, and guess what? Apparently that’s good enough.”

“People will listen to your music and come to your shows as long as the art is honest and good, and you’re just being yourself.”

And when it comes to her music and her artistic vision, Kesha encourages her former self to have faith in her talent.

“You must be strong because over time you will gain confidence and people will learn that words and art do matter.”

“One day, you’re gonna write a song called ‘Rainbow’ and you’re gonna be really proud of it because there is light and beauty after the storm no matter how hard things get.”

“You’re gonna write this song to remember to make it through, and you’re gonna remind yourself to love yourself and if you have truth in your heart there will always be a rainbow at the end of the storm.”

Kesha’s emotional and poignant letter comes as she releases her third studio album ‘Rainbow’.

The album is the result of what can only be described as a traumatic time in the ‘Tik Tok’ singers life.

In 2014, Kesha filed a lawsuit seeking to end her recording and music publishing contracts with songwriter and producer Dr. Luke, who she said subjected her to physical and emotional abuse.

Dr. Luke denied the accusations and fired back with lawsuits of his own.

Legally, the two are still tied together, though Luke did not work on the new album.

Fans and music critics have been full of praise for ‘Rainbow’.

The Guardian calls it a “captivating comeback”, The Atlantic feel its “an album that blends fantasy fun and bummer reality”, while the New York Times claims the record has a “nod to the past” but “roars into the future.”
