Kirribilli harbourfront unit owned by the late paint titan Peter Taubman for sale, $12m+ hopes

The elegant harbourfront apartment of the late Peter Taubman, of the Taubman paint family, has come to market with $12m plus expectations.

Taubman paid $7.5m for the Kirribilli apartment in 2007 and it has a deep-water berth for a substantial yacht, an entire floor of accommodation, a two-car garage with level lift access and a magnificent main bedroom suite with two walk-in wardrobes and a luxury bathroom.

Agent John Conroy of Sotheby’s said the 300sqm apartment has been beautifully maintained, the living rooms and bedrooms flow to full-length glass doors that extend to the oversized private entertainer’s terrace and there are unobstructed and sweeping views across the harbour to the Eastern Suburbs.

The apartment is being sold by expressions of interest closing this Thursday (December 8) and although there is no published price guide industry sources suggest a figure of $12m or more.

The small enclave of six apartments at 9 Elamang Ave share a swimming pool at the water’s edge and the Taubman apartment, number two, is walking distance to the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, Kirribilli’s cafes and Holbrook Ave Wharf for easy city ferry access.

Taubmans celebrates its 125th year in the paint industry this year.

Home prices stabilise

It was created in 1897 by George Henry Taubman who, with his brother Nathaniel, was keen to create paint and varnishes that could stand up to Australia’s harsh climate.

The pair opened a factory in Sydney in 1901 and the business quickly expanded.

By 1964, Taubmans was one of Australia’s biggest companies offering a vast range of shades and it revolutionised the way colour was selected with Taubmans House of Ideas.

The Taubmans brand was acquired by US group PPG Industries in 2007 — the year that Peter Taubman bought this apartment.
