Growing up, Mohit spent his early years studying in schools throughout Himachal Pradesh.

It was his grandfather who influenced his interest in music. He was also a professional classical singer who used to sing and play guitar, harmonica, and flute. He also considers singer Kishore Kumar to be his biggest hero.

Prior to making his debut in the music industry, he wanted to become an actor.

As a musician, Mohit had not received any formal training.

He is very fond of dogs and also feeds stray dogs. Mohit is the chairman of Animals Are People Too. He is also an active participant of the National Skill Development Corporation.

Mohit is a nature enthusiast.

The first film song that he sang was for the movie Road with the song Pehli Nazar Mein Dari Thi.

He along with Kem Trivedi (keyboards) and Kenny Puri were the vocalists for Silk Route.

With Silk Route, Mohit released his debut album titled Boondein in 1998, which included the tracks Dooba Dooba, Hamsafar, Jaadugar, Boondein, Ganga Nahale, Paheli, Thanda Paani, Saujha, Mermaid, and Koi Pooche.
